Clover’s Chalice (2026) is derived from the charcoal drawing of the same title  on view in Summer 26 at 839. The composition traces the simple outline and decorative flourish of an inverted chalice. Produced from a high-quality scan, the print faithfully reproduces the 10 x 7-inch original, capturing the texture of the paper, its fibrous torn edges, and even a watermark visible in the upper right. The image is presented with a one-inch rag paper border on all sides. 

In a recent piece for Kentucky’s Kudzujelly, writer, artist, and curator Sean J Patrick Carney describes a tension that animates Lerner’s work:

“I’m drawn to something that Lerner’s formal approach leaves pleasantly unresolved: are these haunted objects, or objects made spectral through rendering? Her layered marks accumulate slowly, not unlike sediment. Looking at Lerner’s works recalls the peculiarly rewarding sensation of entering a dim room and waiting for vision to adjust; ghostly fields gradually gain contours, then settle into familiar forms.”

Natalie Lerner (b. 1992, Sarasota, FL) received her BFA from Ringling College of Art & Design (2014) and attended the AICAD/NY Independent Study Program (2013). She was a 2023 resident at Orein Arts, Upstate New York. Lerner has presented solo and two-person exhibitions at Mouse Gallery (Detroit); Parent Company (Brooklyn); Left Field Gallery (Los Osos, CA); and Arts Center Sarasota (FL), among others. Her work has been included in group exhibitions at The Carnegie (Covington, KY, through August 8); September Gallery (Kinderhook, NY); Picture Theory Gallery (New York); Underdonk (Brooklyn); and venues internationally, including Kunstraum Super (Vienna) and Feinkunst Krüger (Hamburg). 839 presented her solo exhibition Inheritor in spring of 2025, and a second solo exhibition with the gallery is forthcoming in April 2027.
